Do you feel like you are faltering? Life has never been easy, ever since the earliest humans had to battle the elements and hunt or gather food to survive. Of course, today’s humans live very different lives.

We don’t have to hunt or gather food we head out to the local supermarket. Global supply chains are so advanced that you can buy anything from a prescription medication refill to a Cox cable subscription without ever leaving your home. Yet, despite all of this convenience, many of us find it very difficult to keep working towards the goals we had when we were kids or young adults.

Empowering Yourself to Reach Your Goals

The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, has been an unprecedented event in human history. The devastation in terms of lives and economies aside, the pandemic has been a very humbling experience for many.

It was a stark and brutal reminder of just how little control humans have over the larger scheme of things. In times like these, when you feel like you aren’t in the driving seat anymore, it can seem very easy to simply let go of your dreams in favor of survival.

But that’s exactly the kind of defeatist thinking you want to avoid. Now, more than ever, is the time you need to hold on tighter to your ambitions. This is the moment of truth in many ways. You’re faced with two options. To hold on to the ambitions and dreams you had growing up. Or to disempower yourself by letting setbacks force you into giving up.

Of course, this is not to underplay the fact that some people may be faced with unavoidable and adverse circumstances. However, for most of us, the remedy is to deconstruct the negativity life keeps throwing at you and remake it into something empowering. The processes you approach may be different from person to person. But the end goal will usually be the same.

Why Giving Up Is Almost Never the Right Choice

People give up on their dreams all the time. Many of the people around you will tell you they are not where they expected to be in their lives. After all, to be human implies emotions, beliefs, and ambitions. When these are positive, the person who has them can often be seen excelling in workplace roles, business leadership positions, and maybe even relationship roles.

Can you imagine if Alexander Graham Bell had given up on his dream of making communication easier? We wouldn’t have companies like AT&T or services like the telephone today. You never know if your dream could bring about an equally significant change. But you still owe it to yourself to try.

However, life usually has a harsh method of instruction. Successive setbacks and failures can chip away at everything that makes us upbeat and positively driven human beings. Moreover, it can often replace it with resentment, fear, or uncertainty. Humans can give up for any number of reasons. Most won’t even be able to recognize them by themselves. However, in many cases, these consist of limiting and disempowering beliefs that can often lead to distorted perception. Some common examples of such beliefs and how to manage them include:

Conquering the Fear of Failure

When fear starts undermining your belief in your abilities and your confidence, it could impair your ability to reach your goals. Obsessing about failing can limit you and force you to drop out of the race, often before the failure actually happens. But when you utilize that fear, instead of simply accepting it, you could push past that boundary and get to your goals faster.

Fear is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a healthy evolutionary instinct, one that helps humans identify potential hazards and proceed accordingly. Used correctly, fear can often prove to be a powerful and effective driving factor. The fear of failing is a common example in nearly any role, from a business professional to a parent. But the difference between a successful business professional or parent and an unsuccessful one can often hinge on conquering that fear.

Replacing People Who Undermine You

When you have a goal and a clear vision of what you want, it is important to surround yourself with like-minded people. The right support system of individuals around you can help you stay on track. Many people will also feed off healthy validation and be driven to excel even more. However, being surrounded by negative people who constantly belittle or undermine your efforts will have the opposite effect.

Even if you don’t internalize what they say, you don’t need any more doubtful voices messing with your trajectory. But that’s exactly what these individuals will do to you. The best (and often toughest) solution is to simply replace the people around you with more positive and encouraging voices. You will need support from time to time, so it is essential to get it from people who understand and buy into your goals.

Tackling Boredom

Do you feel bored after constantly working towards your vision? This could be a disturbing sign. It is not uncommon to feel exhausted, beaten down, or even frustrated by all the obstacles in the way. But if your dream goals have started to bore you, it could indicate you no longer feel as invested in them as you used to. You may no longer feel inspired enough by the end goal to work towards it.

While this could mean several things about your goal setting, the solution is quite simple. It is time to think hard about your goal roadmap. Ask yourself some of the toughest questions known to humans. Such as whether the goals you worked towards were your own, or whether you have only been doing them for other people’s approval. The answer can often prove unsettling, but you could potentially find the perspective that helps you lock in on your own goals.

Managing Stagnation

Feeling like you’ve been stuck in the same place in life for too long? You’re not alone. Many people, including some of the world’s most iconic athletes, leaders, and politicians have felt the same way. Success is rarely a straight incline.

It has many obstacles along the way, as well as times when you plateau and find it hard to see further growth. Remind yourself, however, that plateauing is one of the rites of passage to success. It is up to you to determine how you conquer the plateau, move beyond it, and save yourself from stagnating.
