  • the src attribute that specifies a source for the embedded content
  • the href attribute which provides a hyperlink reference
Once you are familiar with the HTML elements, attributes, and tags, it’s time to set up the document structure by using HTML elements, tags, and attributes.

How to Set up the HTML Document Structure?

When it comes to writing HTML, you need a plain text editor that can be saved with a .html file extension. Dreamweaver and Sublime Text are the two most famous plain text editors that can be used for writing HTML and CSS documents. Notepad ++ and TextWrangler are also good options for Windows and Mac respectively.
The standard HTML structure includes these elements: , and., and.

elements to signify the beginning of the document.

also known as the document type declaration is used to inform web browsers about the version of HTML and place it at the beginning of the HTML document. After declaring the document type by using, now use elements to signify the beginning of the document.

For instance, the element is used to identify the top of the document, which also includes metadata. Keep in mind that the content used inside the element is usually not displayed on the webpage. It only includes the title of the document, links to external files and metadata. The content of a webpage is used within the element.

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html lang=”en”>

    <meta charset=”utf-8″>

    <title>Hello World</title>

    <h1>Hello World</h1>

    <p>This is a web page.</p>

Create Elements in the Layout

To create the basic code of your webpage, you need to create a new file named index.html and style.css files. Once you have created the index.html file, now is the time to create section elements. Use semantic elements

. After creating the sections of the page, fill them up. If you have content for the page, use it, if not, use dummy text which can easily be replaced later. You can see what you have done by copying the index.html file to the main directory of your web server. Now review the page by navigating to it through a web browser.

Add Basic Layout CSS

When you have completed the HTML doc, it’s time to focus on the visual style and appearance of the webpage. For example, width, height, margin, padding, position and display. There are some CSS terms that every web developer should know – Selectors, Properties, and Values

When HTML elements are added to a webpage, they can be styled by using CSS selectors., such as color, size, position, etc. A selector is used to identify which element withing the HTML needs to be styled. Selectors have a combination of qualifiers to select unique elements.  Please note that selectors are followed with curly brackets body {….}

Property is used to determine the style that is applied to the HTML element. For example, background, color, font size, height, and width are a few properties that can be applied to the element. body {color: … ; font-size: … ; }

The behavior of the property can be determined by a value, which can be identified as the text between the colon and semicolon. body {color: blue ; font-size: 10px ; }

How to Use Selectors?

It is important to know the most common types of selectors – class and ID selectors
ID and Class selectors are used to style custom attribute names in the HTML file. ID is used to style one element, while class selectors can be used to style multiple elements.
Example of ID Selector:
#lifestyle { }

Example of Class Selector:
.element { }

Referencing CSS

In order to get these two languages, work together, you need to reference the CSS file within the HTML. You can reference the CSS by including all styles in a single external style sheet which allows you to use the same styles across the website and make changes in the entire website.
When it comes to creating an external CSS style sheet, you need a text editor to create a plain text file with a .css file extension. Make sure to save your CSS file in the same folder where your HTML file is saved. Keep in mind that you can write CSS directly in theelement of the HTML document. The external CSS allows you to link multiple HTML pages to the same CSS file. Making any changes to the CSS will update the style for each page.
Make sure the webpage looks good on every browser. To ensure cross-browser compatibility, you can use CSS resets that involve removing any additional style and balance the page elements from top to bottom.

Preview the Webpage

To preview the webpage, use VS code – select “on index.html” and then select “open in the default browser”. Carefully check the font style, headings, header position, another basic framework, and specific styles. You can change the color, add background styles, or any other elements to make it visually appealing.
So, here you go! You are done with your webpage. By using the same steps, everyone, including Toronto SEO & Canadian entrepreneurs, marketers, and bloggers can create the entire website using HTML and CSS.
